Despite what you may have read or heard, the penis itself has no muscles. (Consequently, exercise or activity will not permanently change the size or the shape of the penis.) However, there are important muscles at the base of the penis that rhythmically contract and propel the semen down the urethra and out the penis.

These muscles are somewhat unusual, because they operate both automatically and under a man’s conscious control. For example, during ejaculation, a man does not decide to contract these muscles; it just happens. However, a man does have conscious control over these muscles sometimes. If a man contracts the muscles at the base of his penis when he has an erection, he can increase the firmness of his erection for a few seconds. Some sex therapists recommend exercises to increase the strength of these muscles.

As a man ages, the muscles become less powerful, and his ejaculation may have a little less force. Also, because these muscles help him void urine completely, an older man with somewhat relaxed muscles may find himself dribbling a small amount of urine after he thinks he’s finished.
