Evening primrose oil has proved to be very useful in treating certain aspects of alcoholism, particularly withdrawal symptoms, liver damage, and hangovers. It may also help reverse some of the brain damage caused by alcoholism.

The reason why evening primrose oil works in alcoholism is largely because it converts to Prostaglandin El (PGE1). This prostaglandin plays a key role in alcoholism.

Alcohol has a paradoxical effect on PGEl. When you drink small amounts of alcohol, it stimulates the production of PGEl. But when the level of drinking is stepped up, alcohol robs the body of PGEl.

In fact, small amounts of alcohol may be positively good for you. Recent research in North America and Western Europe has consistently reached this conclusion. The risk of heart disease is reduced in people who have a modest intake of alcohol – perhaps a glass or two of wine, or a beer, or one or two drinks of whisky a day. People who drink at this level tend to live longer than teetotalers, and much longer than people who drink more alcohol.

Many people drink socially because it makes them feel good. This may well be because, without knowing it, they are raising their levels of PGEl. PGEl can bring about euphoric states: doctors have noticed almost euphoric reactions in patients being given intra-venous infusion of PGEl. And studies on manic people, who feel abnormally euphoric, show that they make more PGE1 than normal. However, this mood-elevating effect of PGE1 from drinking alcohol only happens when someone drinks small amounts.

The story changes quite dramatically once the intake of alcohol increases to moderate or large amounts. At this level, alcohol has two bad effects on the body’s stores of essential fatty acids, and therefore on the metabolism of prostaglandin El.

First, alcohol enhances the conversion of dihomo-gammalinolenic acid to PGE1. This may sound like a good thing, but in fact it has disastrous consequences. Because alcohol stimulates the synthesis of PGE1, it draws on the body’s stores of dihomo-gammalinolenic acid (DGLA), and these stores of DGLA can run out quite quickly. When the action of the alcohol wears off, the stores of DGLA may be so reduced that the levels of PGE1 fall below normal.

Second, alcohol in moderate to large amounts is one of the main blocking agents in the metabolic pathway of essential fatty acids. Alcohol blocks both the delta-6-desaturase enzyme, and also the delta-5-desaturase enzyme. The delta-6-desaturase enzyme converts linoleic acid to GLA, and the delta-5-desaturase enzyme converts DGLA to arachidonic acid. These two enzymes are also involved in the metabolism of the alpha-linolenic acid family, and alcohol blocks the metabolic pathway of this family of essential fatty acids as well. Incidentally, alcohol has no effect on these enzymes if it is only drunk in small amounts.

The consequences of these two things are serious. As alcohol blocks the conversion of linoleic acid to GLA, this also has an effect on the stores of DGLA. It means that no matter how much linoleic acid you eat in your diet, the depleted stores of DGLA cannot be replenished. Consequently, drinking moderate to large amounts of alcohol over a long period of time will lead to a serious deficiency of essential fatty acids.

Many of the long-term effects of alcohol may relate to these very low levels of essential fatty acids. The dramatic fall in PGE1 which happens in alcoholism may account for the hangovers, withdrawal symptoms and depression that so often go with heavy drinking.

The low levels of PGE1 in alcoholics may have other serious consequences too. This includes the risk of heart attacks and strokes, high blood pressure, a reduced ability to cope with infections, brain and nerve deterioration, and liver damage. An alcoholic gets caught in a vicious spiral. He or she may have started drinking because it gave his or her mood a lift-But the more he or she drinks, the more he or she needs to drink to get the same ‘high’. The explanation for this is that as you drink more and more, your supplies of dihomo-gammalinolenic acid get lower and lower, so PGE1 simply cannot be made.

Condoms have never been considered a reliable form of contraception and doctors rarely advise patients to use them as such. Since the advent of the AIDS virus, condoms have been widely touted as an AIDS «prophylactic.» This emphasis is surprising considering the poor history of condoms as a form of contraception. On the subject of history, Don Juan was reputed to use a silk condom and historical writings also suggest that sausage skins or animal intestines were used as enthusiastic, if not effective forms of early contraception.

General practitioners frequently have women attending, worried about the consequences of a burst condom. Dr. Pamela Chick, formerly of the Family Planning Association in Queensland, points out that if a condom complies with Australian standards it is unlikely that consistent bursting is due to penis size. It is far more likely that the condom is not being put on properly, is torn with a fingernail, has passed the expiry date or has not been stored correctly.

If people are having trouble with breakages they should follow the instructions for use – carefully, taking particular care to remove all air from the tip of the condom while applying it and lubricate with a water based lubricant (KY Gel etc.). It is very important that the lubricant is water based as an oil based lubricant can destroy the rubber. The avoidance of extra thin condoms is also recommended and condoms should be used before the expiry date and stored correctly.

Contrary to popular belief condoms are available in many different shapes and sizes. For those wanting a tighter condom, Crest (they are very thin – take care with fingernails etc.) and Duo Gold Shaped are recommended. As well as these two condoms, Liaison Joie comes manufactured narrower towards the base thus ensuring a tighter fit.

Those wishing to purchase a wider or a longer condom might like to try Ansell Chekmates and Lifestyle Ultrasure and if the user finds a particular brand of condoms thick, rubbery, smelly or tough, they may like to try: Crest (check the freshness) and Durex Featherlite (pink).

As a final word of warning: be careful with multicolored and flavored imports (mail order and sex shops) and always check for use by dates.

Once on the job, make the same commitment you would if you were receiving a paycheck. Be reliable; complete your assignments; respect the confidences of clients you serve. Volunteer work is far from «optional.» If it were, there would be no point in considering it a valuable way to spend your time.

While many agencies place volunteers of any age, four sponsored by the federal government are just for people sixty and over: the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), and the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs. There also are many excellent local volunteer agencies for older people throughout the country.

RSVP is by far the largest older adult volunteer program, with over a quarter of a million participants serving on nearly seven hundred projects in all fifty states. With its far-ranging roster of placements and its national reputation, it makes sense to look into RSVP first, particularly if you are not sure where you want to work and are volunteering in part to meet people your own age. Participants in RSVP get together for various functions such as parties and lectures. In fact this organization combines some of the social features of a club with those of an agency.

The other three national older persons’ volunteer programs are much more limited in scope. SCORE, sponsored by the Small Business Administration, is specifically for retired businessmen who want to use their skills in helping others. People in this program offer small businesses assistance and guidance in accounting, finance, advertising, marketing, taxation, and other aspects of management.

The famous Foster Grandparent Program and the newer, less known Senior Companion Program are only for low-income people. Both ask for a substantial part-time commitment. In return, volunteers get transportation to their placements, meals while on the job, intensive training and supervision, and a small weekly stipend.

Foster grandparents serve as caring grandparents to emotionally disturbed and physically or mentally handicapped children. They provide two hours of individual attention to each of two children daily, time no one else is able to offer. Foster grandparents usually work in institutions for the handicapped or in schools. However, as is true in a Texas project where foster grandparents work with abused and neglected infants and also teach good child-rearing techniques, they sometimes donate their time at the child’s home.

Senior companions serve the opposite end of the age spectrum, physically and mentally impaired older adults. During a usually twenty-hour week, a senior companion visits several homebound clients, either to talk – perhaps offering the only human contact the disabled person may get – or to provide concrete help. Senior companions read, shop, and take walks with their clients. They may help them fill out Medicaid forms or apply for food stamps. One of the unique aspects of this program is the ongoing close relationship that develops between clients and volunteers. As with any good volunteer experience, both the giver and the receiver benefit. In the words of one senior companion whose visits have kept an older client from having to enter a nursing home: «I’m happy for the first time since the children left home and I broke up housekeeping. Pauline’s been as good for me as I am for her.»

Just as volunteering has given this woman a sense of purpose, you should demand the same from any of the doors that swing open by virtue of your being a «mature» adult. Do not waste these priceless years succumbing to outmoded stereotypes about what age sixty or eighty is supposed to mean. Make this your time to flower!

The principles outlined above also hold true for children who wake during the night, unwanted habits of the child. The suggestions outlined here should not be considered for babies of less than 6 months, who are not yet into an established sleep pattern, and should be used with caution in those younger than 12 months. Beyond this age group, they are almost always effective in assisting the child to develop better sleep habits.

Waking during the night is not abnormal. What is abnormal is a child who wakes and then demands, indeed has come to expect, attention from his parents in the middle of the night. The problem usually begins because the parents will go to the child soon after he wakes up, rather than let him cry.

There are two ways that parents can deal with children who wake during the night and have learned to expect a feed or cuddle. They can either wean the child from this habit ‘cold turkey’ or else do it by ‘extinction’ over a period of time. Which of these is used depends on the preference of the parents — both are likely to be effective. Parents need to be sure they want to implement the treatment regime, then pick a starting date. Often a relationship with a health professional can be reassuring and supportive during this time.
The possibility that oestrogen may cause cancer of the breast is not supported by the evidence and the risk of clots is so small as not to count when compared to the advantages.

Many women experience depression following removal of the womb, others lose all interest in sex. These side-effects can be prevented if proper care in explaining to women what the operation entails is given before the operation.

This must be given in language the woman can understand. It may need to be repeated, especially if the woman is worried, as she may not take it all in the first time.

Then following the operation repeated counselling may be necessary.

In the past many tolerated discomfort from heavy periods or pain from many of the pelvic disorders. Now a new generation is not prepared to tolerate these symptoms and demands relief, and, often, operation is the only effective treatment.

Women, being better educated and more insistent on their rights, properly demand operation rather than tolerate severe discomfort.

An added bonus for many women is removal of the risk of pregnancy.

Far from a hysterectomy being a defeminising operation, it can, and should be, a liberating factor in her life, taking away the tyranny of pain, discomfort and ill-health.

Every baby, infant and child will experience various disorders of the abdomen and gastro-intestinal system. This is inevitable. The ones we have already discussed are among the more common. However, there is a huge list of others. The average child will not be involved in these, but without doubt a certain number of little ones are destined to contract one of them. Diagnosis is often difficult, and even doctors expert in the field of baby care may be hoodwinked and find the exact diagnosis takes time and many tests.

Only a few of the important but less common abdominal disorders are described on the following pages. It is not an exhaustive list of complaints, nor does it give more than brief general information. But it may offer some extra detail if a parent hears of the complaint or wishes to have some added knowledge.

As I have emphasized earlier, this book is intended to be used only as a general guide. It is not a do-it-yourself compendium, and is not intended to be used that way. Whilst many simple ailments may be treated at home by parents, others require proper medical diagnosis and supervision in treatment. Never begrudge money or time spent in having the best possible attention for your child. It may pay handsome dividends and may be life-saving.
It is far better to use whole-wheat or multi-grain bread or milk bread, rather than simple white or brown varieties. (Milk bread has a higher protein component, as protein from milk has been added.)

The fillings should be given careful thought. It is easy to make or marr the value of the sandwich with the contents. High-protein fillings include meat, cheese, and egg. Many ‘health food’ products are now commercially available, such as nut-meat and similar lines which are high in protein. Most of these contain gluten, the protein fraction of wheat. They can be used directly, or in conjunction with other items.

In fact, many sandwiches are far more appetising when they are combined with other products. For instance, any of the above protein items can readily and tastefully be included in a nice, thick, salad sandwich. Salad products give the sandwich a light, crunchy, attractive appearance and sensation when eating.

Use only a small amount of butter. Many mothers will use unsaturated margarine in preference. Adding a vitamin extract, such as Marmite, can upgrade the value of the sandwich.

Some mothers do away with bread altogether. This is replaced by a crisp salad. It is simple to prepare in a plastic, airtight dish and convey to school where it is eaten at the appropriate time.

Rather than include cakes and sweet biscuits, a packet of nuts, raisins, dried apricots (or peach or apple) and sultanas is far better. It is easy to make up a different pack each day—this can contain any one or a combination of the items suggested. Other items can be included that are of nutritional value.

A piece of fruit each day is also a good idea. It is wise to alternate these from day to day if possible, For example, have an orange one day, an apple the next, apricot or peach the next. This will depend on availability and price, but variation will cover a wider range of vitamin requirements. And it will often be more economical than cake and biscuits, which have little nutritive value.

The lunch pack can be broken up into segments that may be used for play lunches and lunch itself. Either let the child decide what to eat and when, or do this by making individual servings. It is so simple to wrap some nuts and pieces of dried fruit and place this parcel on the top, for morning recess.

An easy-to-prepare lunch pack consists of a couple of slices of cheese together with a few short pieces of celery. Or some cheese and a slice of fresh pineapple. There are unlimited possibilities.

The simplest and best beverage is, of course, cold water. When some chipped ice is added, this is the most refreshing drink available. It is far more thirst-quenching on hot days than sugar-based aerated beverages which contain about 420 kJ (100 calories) per glass. The latter frequently increase the body’s heat factor, even though they might be served cold.

Orange and lemon drinks are excellent. But their value can often be destroyed by adding loads of sugar. Freshly squeezed orange juice with no sugar is an excellent, healthful and refreshing drink. It is also high in vitamin C which is essential for good health.

If you encourage your child to buy his or her food, or if it is more convenient, first discuss the basics of healthy eating. Recommend fruits, nuts and dried fruits in preference to sweets and lollies. Meat pies and pastry are nutritionally useless, so try to phase a child out of this unhealthy habit. It is far better never to let it start.

Spending a little time and thought can pay handsome dividends. Why not opt for the sensible way, and prepare your children’s lunches yourself. Enlist their assistance and you can readily teach them the basics of healthful living, and long term good health.
