This remedy attacks tumours, growths and all other pathological cell changes very forcibly. In cases of diseases of the respiratory tract, for example the lungs, Petasites should be given highly diluted. Recently, I spoke to a professor of medicine in Germany with whom I had left samples of the tincture for experimental purposes, and he confirmed that Petasites is a ’strong’ medicine. He said that doses of only one drop gave rise to severe reactions in sensitive patients. It must be added that Petasites is quite harmless and nonpoisonous, so that strong reactions need not be any cause for alarm. Doctors who complain that our natural remedies are not potent enough to produce a satisfactory therapeutic reaction should try some of them to find out for themselves that fresh plant extracts can be as spectacular in their effects as many chemotherapeutic drugs, with the added advantage of their being harmless and nontoxic. This fact proves that nature holds many hidden powers which could be utilised for the benefit of the sick.

Not long ago I received a letter describing the treatment of an animal with Petasites. A terrier had developed a growth on one of her nipples, but this remedy soon reduced it in size.

Above all, it is most important to look after our feet and wash them daily. Since the feet are excretory organs and the sweat rids the body of toxins, it is even more important to wash your feet every day than it is to wash your face. This cleansing is very important to one’s general well-being. Although there are incidents mentioned in the Bible where ‘washing of the feet’ had a symbolic meaning (for example humility), we should never overlook the intrinsic therapeutic value either. The washing of feet in the Middle East is almost a ritual because most people wear sandals and recognise the hygienic and health reasons for doing so. We should do it for the same reasons. To convince yourself, try washing your feet every day for one month and you will notice how your general feeling of well-being improves.

At the end of the day, if you feel tired and perhaps have a headache, try a herbal foot bath and see how it will soothe you. Add to the bath wild thyme, juniper needles or any other aromatic herbs and your feet will feel refreshed and invigorated. To increase the effect, after the foot bath apply a good oil that stimulates skin function; St John’s wort oil or olive oil can be used for this. Even if done only once a week, this oil treatment is most beneficial. Another soothing foot oil is Juniperosan.

Daily care of the feet takes only a few minutes but it pays dividends in good health and saves medical bills. Try to do it on a regular basis. Further guidelines for proper foot care are given immediately below.

Never deceive yourself into thinking that a small dental defect will eventually correct itself. Visit your dentist right away. Have your teeth checked regularly and have the dentist look out especially for any dead teeth.

A capable dentist, at the first sign of articular rheumatism or heart trouble, for example, will X-ray the teeth to see if an abscess may be the cause of the trouble. The effective treatment of this type of inflammation requires professional knowledge and skill. If you have waited too long, so that you need large fillings, be careful as to the material used. Some people experience unpleasant side-effects when certain amalgams are used to fill a cavity, chief among which are mercury and silver. Depending on the individual’s constitution and potential resistance, these amalgams can trigger heart trouble, a dazed state or headaches, making him unable to perform mental work efficiently. These symptoms persist until the amalgam fillings are removed. Once that is done, the problems that may have been plaguing a person for years usually disappear. Some material resembling the tooth substance should be used to fill the pulp canals, wherever possible. Gold crowns have often proved their worth, too, but they are not suitable for everyone, especially those sensitive to metals.

Instead of trying to overcome inhibitions and inferiority complexes by doing commendable work, some young people learn to smoke and drink, habits that are detrimental to their health. While acquiring a taste for these things they develop an internal insensi-tivity but this price is paid without much thought, since the end result helps to suppress their feeling of inferiority.

It is a strange thing that if something tastes bad and bitter or burns on the tongue, once one had become used to it, the palate even comes to like it. But should not exactly this reaction move us to embrace only good and healthy habits? Of course it should! And by the way, the craving to suck something can be satisfied in a completely harmless way. Simply keep some raisins in your pocket and eat them whenever you experience the desire for a cigarette. Raisins are stimulating because of the valuable grape sugar they contain. This is not only nourishing and strengthening but also much tastier than nicotine and tar products. If you are able to help someone give up the vice of smoking, you will be helping him not only to save a considerable amount of money but, what is more important, you may also save him from the cancer that might otherwise catch up with him in later years.

Rheumatoid arthritis belongs to the category of rheumatic-arthritic diseases called ‘Polyarthritis’ in German, literally ‘multiple arthritis’, for it occurs in several joints at the same time. Did you know that it imposes by far the greatest financial burden on the social welfare and health institutions of most developed nations? Few people realise that each year huge sums of money are spent in an effort to help the millions who suffer from this terrible disease. Since I have had cause to treat many patients with rheumatoid arthritis, I would like to write a few words on this subject.

People who have low resistance and lack antibodies, for example those who suffer from liver disorders, are rendered more susceptible to infectious diseases. Hence the need to take natural antibiotics, which will build up the body’s resistance to infections. Of course, it is impossible to avoid every source of infection because we are exposed to them through the food we eat and the air we breathe. City air, especially, is highly polluted and an examination of even one cubic centimetre will reveal thousands of germs, spores and bacteria. Insects can also be responsible for transmitting diseases, flies and mosquitoes being the best-known carriers. So even with the utmost care and caution it is difficult to escape from all the adverse influences surrounding us, but we can make certain that our bodies have enough resistance and sufficient antibodies to withstand pathogenic agents, thus minimising their attacks. Certain plants, especially the medicinal herbs which contain essential oils, as well as some culinary herbs, possess antibiotic properties that ensure resistance to a wide range of germs. This will be discussed shortly, but first we will consider the effectiveness of some of the medical antibiotics, the use of which has become increasingly common in recent years.

If you know how a sinus infection can come about, you will be able to see that, using natural remedies and treatment, it is quite simple to deal with the cause of this problem. For the most part, such an infection originates in the nose, especially after a head cold, sore throat, influenza, scarlet fever etc. It can also result from pus-forming bacteria in abscesses on the gums. When this happens, secretions are blocked, the circulation becomes restricted, the normal functions can no longer be sustained and the body must find another way out. The leucocytes and lymphocytes now appear on the scene to avert serious danger. The body has several options of defence and if the normal way of dealing with infection is not open, it will find another one to ward off the greatest danger, suppuration of the antrum or sinus being just one way of preventing worse developments.

Even though we know something about the anatomical structure] and the functions of the tongue, we have by no means exhausted the full extent of its operations and capabilities. We know, of course, that we owe the gift of oral communication to the tongue. But that is not all. The tongue is at the same time the ‘voice’ of) the heart, the figurative seat of the ability to feel, think and make decisions. This little organ thus may be a source of blessing ori curse for ourselves and others.

From the Bible we learn that horses and ships are easier to manoeuvre and control than the tongue. Though small in size, the tongue can, metaphorically speaking, ignite a ‘fire’ so devastating that it destroys a forest.

How sad is its influence when spreading evil gossip and, by doingi so, slandering friends and dear companions. Envy and hatred, too,] make use of this nimble little instrument of the soul when sending out its poisonous arrows to do harm to successful fellowmen. As slick as oil, the tongue obeys the voice of temptation, for the chosen \ victim cannot escape its treacherous influence. Many a tongue cannot distinguish between ‘yes’ and ‘no’, so that its contradictions,] hypocrisy and lies play a part in destroying the innocent. A disap-l pointed person may pour out the bitterness of his heart throug the tongue and infect or poison others. What dreadful words maj be uttered through this inconspicuous little organ in the mouth the mentally deranged! The confused state of mind and inner conflict of such a person often seems to surface by means of the tongue. It is hard for a healthy, normal person to understand or face such an outburst.

Poliomyelitis is a sinister disease, yet on the whole quite brief. The polio virus is highly infectious and its virulent toxins, if concentrated, are able to attack and destroy the nerve cells, leading to paralysis. The illness itself ordinarily lasts only about 2-3 weeks. The paralysis that follows is actually the disease’s aftermath. It is therefore most important to treat the disease thoroughly and with the minimum of delay. Judging by the letters I keep receiving, it is once more necessary to remind lay people as well as professionals of the fundamental rules regarding the treatment of polio.

Some time ago, a man from central Switzerland told me that his son, a strong and healthy boy, was hospitalised for tests and observation because it was thought he might have polio. Day after day passed without the doctor in charge attempting any treatment, until the first signs of paralysis appeared in the lungs. The boy was then placed in an iron lung, but he died within a few weeks, despite having been so strong and healthy. Let me add that this incident occurred many years ago and would be most unlikely to happen with the modern approach to the disease.

Breast milk, especially the very first secretion called colostrum, contains enzyme-like substances, nutritive salts and vitamins, some of which are known to us but others unknown; these cannot be found in any other food in the same quality and proportions. Moreover, breast milk is the source of immunising agents and alexins that protect the baby from diseases. Herein lies one of the greatest secrets of why very young breast-fed babies are immune to certain infections.

The argument that suckling a baby damages a mother’s health and beauty can be refuted as unfounded because there is sufficient evidence to the contrary. A mother who is reasonably healthy actually benefits from breast-feeding, since during the time of nursing, under normal circumstances, the glands with internal and external secretions will function more efficiently and abundantly. The absorption of food and its vitamins is at its best at this time. The womb returns to normal much more easily in nursing mothers than in those who renounce their natural privilege and bottle-feed their offspring. Also, there is no doubt that a lasting psychological rapport and harmony are established between the mother and her breast-fed baby. In this way both mother and child profit by this natural relationship, as is always evident when we refrain from interfering with the Creator’s natural laws.
