A classic self-poisoner is the person who is primarily interested in maintaining his image of “nice guy.” His characteristic role reflects his attitude that the most important thing in the world for him is to avoid incurring the displeasure of others by being consistently pleasing, accommodating, and selfless. Beneath this “wonderful person” facade is the spiteful brat who wants his own way and resents his super accommodating attitude. The “nice guy” (or “nice girl”) invariably suffers from a combination of the patterns discussed above. The self-poisoning comes when he refuses to say no and functions, instead, as if he had a phobia about rejecting anyone. When one chronically denies one’s self, the inevitable consequence is slow death.
